Black Ants

Ants often move nest sites when disturbed, or with a change in food supply.  This can make control and removal of ants difficult.  They may leave for short periods only to return later when a new food source is located and they can re-colonise from nearby nests very quickly.

The black house ant is 2-3 mm in size and as the name suggests they are black in colour.  They are most often seen in the house, either swarming on an object or in a long trail.

Nests are typically around buildings and in wall voids near kitchens.  With numbers in the thousands their constant presence is often a huge annoyance for a home owner.

To effectively control ants, any nests need to be found and treated.

Nests can be in locations as obscure as:

  • Within food packaging in the pantry
  • Boxes stored in cupboards
  • Inside tap fittings
  • Beneath tiles - both on the floor and wall
  • Electrical switches
  • Ornaments
  • Pot plants or internal gardens
  • Video cassettes or record collections
  • Window fram hollows, especially tubular fly screen frames etc....

You can also help to reduce ant infestation in your home by:

  • Ensuring food is not left out on kitchen counters, etc.
  • Cleaning up food spills immediately
  • Removing unconsumed pet food
  • Making sure tree branches and plants do not come into contact with the house
  • Cleaning out gutters of leaf build-up
  • Sealing cracks and crevices

Ant Treatments:

A professional ant treatment can successfully rid your home of these pesky critters, however patience is often required.  Every nest needs to be identified and treated and this can be difficult because ants often nest in obscure or hard to reach locations.  However there are a few things Sandgate Pest Control can do to help control ants as effectively as possible.

  •  If the ants are nesting within the wall cavity we can use an electric blower to spread dust throughout the wall cavity, killing the ants and their nest.

  • Spraying the outside of the house provides an immediate knockdown of the trails and swarms of live ants.

  • To help keep the ants out in future we also apply ant granules around the perimeter of your house.  These granules are absorbed into the soil and create a chemical barrier to stop the ants returning to your house in the future.

These techniques are only some of the ones employed by our pest management technicians and will be carried out (if appropriate to your situation) in all of our black ant treatments.  After arriving at your house the pest management technician will assess your ant situation and apply the treatment in a way that will achieve the most effective results.
